Iterative development

I just heard one of my fellow developers blaming iterative development for missing pieces of a design, "That's iterative development for you" and it made me think about the balance of up front design to iterative learning. This is always a problem. Design too far in teh future and you may be wasting time. Not far enough and ou may have to change the implementation more often. There is a balance, a sweet spot and every project is different.
